RECAPPING THE 2023 CIVICS BEE

The first Frederick County Civics Bee was held on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at Hodson Auditorium at Hood College. Twenty one finalists competed in two rounds of civics questions. After hearing the question from emcee, Dr. Colleen Bernard, Secondary Social Studies Curriculum Specialist, Frederick County Public Schools, students had thirty seconds to answer the question on their tablets. At the end of the second round of civics questions, the top five finalists remained on stage for the final round. During the third and final round, the top five finalists were asked to speak about their essays they had written. A panel of live judges then asked each of the five finalists follow up questions on their essay. 

The first, second, and third place finalists advanced to the state level bee competition that will take place on June 17th

FIRST PLACE:
Marcelo Tellez | Walkersville Middle School
The first place winner received a $1,000 cash prize along with coupons to Bruster's Ice Cream, Starvin Marvin's Pizza, South Mountain Creamery and The Great Frederick Fair.

SECOND PLACE: Tanvi Chatuverdi | Urbana Middle School
The second place winner received a $500 cash prize along with coupons to Bruster's Ice Cream, Starvin Marvin's Pizza, South Mountain Creamery and The Great Frederick Fair.

THIRD PLACE: Jackson Mulligan | Urbana Middle School
The third place winner received a $250 cash prize along with coupons to Bruster's Ice Cream, Starvin Marvin's Pizza, South Mountain Creamery and The Great Frederick Fair.

Each of the 21 finalists received a 7” tablet, stand and case sponsored by Clark Computer Services. Along with coupons to Bruster's Ice Cream and Starvin Marvin's Pizza.
