Live Here

Frederick County is nestled at the crossroads of five major highways, providing quick access to Baltimore and Washington, DC. These thoroughfares, coupled with the Frederick Municipal Airport and the MARC train system, make Frederick one of the most convenient and affordable locations in Maryland. Frederick County is Maryland's largest county in size at 664 square miles. It is home to a nationally recognized public school system, the site of the state's first charter school and three institutions of higher education—Frederick Community College, Hood College and Mount St. Mary’s University.

At the heart of the County is historic downtown Frederick, a neighborhood filled with workplaces, homes, shops, theaters, museums and restaurants.  Home to 69,479 people, the City of Frederick is the second largest Maryland city and also has the fifth-highest population growth rate among state’s municipalities.

Frederick has one of the fastest-growing economies in the State of Maryland, with total private employment growing by 26 percent since 2001, adding more than 17,000 jobs, far outpacing the rates of growth of the United States and Maryland, as well as those of Baltimore and Washington, DC metropolitan areas.

We have a diversified and growing economy specializing in the professional services, finance and insurance and construction sectors, that is experiencing growth among most major industries and outpacing the state and the Baltimore and Washington metro area comparison regions. 41 percent of County residents have a Bachelor’s degree or above and 47 percent of workers are employed in “creative class” management, business, science and arts occupations, exceeding Maryland’s rate of 39 percent of residents with a Bachelor’s degree or above and 45 percent of workers employed in management, business, science and arts occupations and competitive wages within the state and benchmark regions.

Frederick has a competitive business climate, with strong infrastructure, competitive tax rates and affordable real estate. We have a high quality of life, including a regionally competitive cost of living; nationally ranked schools; and substantial cultural, historic and outdoor amenities.

"I simply cannot overstate the importance of the Frederick Chamber to the Battelle National Biodefense Institute.  As Frederick’s nexus for community leadership, the Chamber quickly connected us with everyone we needed to know in business, civic and government life. And, last year when our lab was threatened with closure, the Chamber led the community’s efforts that saved BNBI.  Our decade long investment in the Frederick Chamber has paid off for BNBI over, and over, and over again!" —Brian Gaudet, Communications Director, Battle National Biodefense Institute
